Sculptures in public space, bronze, concrete

The sculpture series “Monumental Abandonment”, dedicated to influential women in Estonian history, has been installed around Arter buildings in Tallin. The concept is based on the exhibition „Out from Behind the Stove! 150 Years of the Estonian Women’s Movement“ in Vabamu in 2023, which was curated by Piret Karro, at whose invitation Flo Kasearu created the equestrian monument designs for all the women the curator had selected from different eras.

In front of the Arter building, on the side of Liivalaia Street, there are eight small bronze figures depicting historical figures and events. Among them are Lilli Suburg, the Kreenholm strike of 1872, Alma Ostra-Oinas, Leida Laius, Marju Lauristin, Eha Komissarov, Anna-Stina Treumundi and also a concrete riderless monument for the future. Behind the block is a life-size equestrian monument depicting Alma Ostra-Oinas (1886–1960), who was an Estonian politician, journalist and activist of the women’s movement and was one of the first women in Estonian parliamentary politics. She actively participated in the formation of the Republic of Estonia and consistently stood up for women’s rights, education and social justice. Her activities contributed to the fact that the voice of women became more visible in the public and political space of Estonia, although her contribution has often been overshadowed in historical memory.
